Hepatitis Can't Wait!

The theme for this year’s World Hepatitis Day on July 28^th highlights the need to test and treat viral hepatitis diseases: “I can’t wait.”

Viral hepatitis is a group of five diseases that collectively kill nearly 1.4 million people worldwide each year. In fact, one person dies from hepatitis-related illness every 30 seconds.

“I can’t wait” points out the ongoing urgency of World Hepatitis Day since:

• People living with viral hepatitis unaware can’t wait for testing.
• People living with hepatitis can’t wait for life-saving treatments.
• Expectant mothers can’t wait for hepatitis screening and treatment.
• Newborn babies can’t wait for birth dose vaccination.
• People affected by hepatitis can’t wait to end stigma and discrimination.

While there are several types of hepatitis, the hepatitis C virus garners particular attention since untreated hepatitis C infection can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even the need for a liver transplant. Yet the good news is that hepatitis C is both a preventable and treatable disease.
