A surprising silver lining in the Covid-19...
Pemphigus vulgaris is a rare group of autoimmune disorders that cause blisters and erosion of the skin and lining of the mouth and other mucus membranes. This painful condition can be treated in a variety of ways, including with infusions of IVIG.
Pemphigus vulgaris occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks proteins in the upper layers of the skin. The resulting blisters and sores can vary from mild to severe. Middle-aged and older adults are the most likely to develop this painful skin disorder.
Pemphigus symptoms can be long-lasting, particularly if treatment is not started. Medications can lessen the formation of blisters, promote the healing of existing blisters, and reduce scarring. In addition, the goal of treatment is to achieve and maintain remission.
Treatments options for this lifelong blistering disease include:
Infusions of IVIG offer effective treatment for appropriate patients with pemphigus. This effectiveness was recently highlighted in a study conducted by dermatologist Sergei Grando, MD from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Grando reported 88% effectiveness in achieving and maintaining remission in a group of 123 pemphigus patients who received IVIG treatment (2g/kg dosage).
